Spartan Men Take Third, Women Fourth at Regionals
NIRCA XC Regionals in Lexington, KY
Nov. 1st, 2014

The Spartans brought the Michigan weather with them this weekend to Lexington, Kentucky, home of the 2014 NIRCA Great Lakes Regional meet. Last year, thirty-four Spartans ran the Regional meet that we hosted 20 minutes away from campus. This year, a record-breaking thirty-nine Spartan runners traveled 6 hours to Kentucky to toe the line for regionals.
The day started with the women’s race at 10am. The Spartan women fought through snow and heavy winds for a close 4th place team finish, missing third by just 2 points to NIRCA newcomers Notre Dame. Despite the disappointing bump off the podium, the Spartan women still performed well within one of the toughest NIRCA regions. Leading the Lady Spartans was Steph Schmidt who came in third overall in 23:39 and was All-Region. Missing our number two Spartan runner Alex Dutcher, Steph was followed by our strong 2-4 pack of freshmen Nicole Mosteller (24:28, PR, 14th) and Erin Zimmer (24:42, 17th), and junior Tarah Thompson (24:58, 23rd). Following up to round off the weekend’s top 8 runners were veteran Val Morel (25:52), newcomer sophomore Sarah Wallace (25:54, PR), junior Christina Casali (26:11), and senior Megan McNitt (26:17), who did a great job working together as teammates throughout the race. Newcomers Elle White and Jessica Siegler followed with another pair of PR’s. Making their debut in the 6k were Natalie Whise (PR) and Sharayah Macomber (PR), followed by Annie Grove (PR) and Katy Gwizdala who finished together. Upperclassmen Emma Winn, Jessica Plemmons (PR), and Aliza Weiss (PR) rounded off the race for the Lady Spartans. In case you lost count, that’s 9 PR’s out of 17 runners facing rolling hills, harsh winds, and freezing temps! Not bad, ladies.
Up next was the men’s race at 11am, and it was clear that the Spartan men came to compete. Leading the Spartan men were junior Adam Terwillegar (26:41, 9th) and graduate student Colin Riley (26:46, 10th). Working together as teammates the two were able to score some low points for the team and clinch the final two All-Region places for the men. Not far behind was senior Mark Choate (27:10, 14th) who also had a great race. Rounding off the scoring for the men were Tall Paul Salach (28:01, 31st) and the Clydesdale Trent Johnson (28:12, 37th) who was competing on his home course in the pasture. Freshman talent Jacob Young (28:24) was the 6th Spartan across the line followed by junior Alex Miros (29:04) to make a solid top seven. Automatic PR’s to those new to the 8k went
to club newcomers Ben Richardson, Jake Wojnicki, Logan Soldo, and Reagan Stowell. Great finishes across the board came from Pat Frahm (PR), Nathan Blosser, Mike Brichta, Jonathan Sollish, Ryan Squanda, an under-the-weather Ben Lambert, Lucas Bowman, WaffleJoel Simpson (PR), and Sean Virden. The men performed well enough for their third consecutive third place regional finish, in a region containing soon-to-be- national champs IU nonetheless! Incredible performance and teamwork shown by the Spartan Men this weekend.
With the full squad at nats all performing their best the Lady Spartans are lined up for a 4th place finish. The Spartan Men are projected to be in the top ten for the first time in club history. These are the best two teams MSURC has ever had. We’ve been putting in the work all season, some of us since May. We have home-course advantage. Nationals are in 9 days. Get ready.
The Spartan men took home the third place trophy for the the third straight year. The Spartans were led by the dynamic 1-2 punch of Adam Terwillegar (9th) and Colin Riley (10th).
The Spartan women took a tough loss to NIRCA newcomer, Notre Dame, to take fourth place by a mere two points. The women were led by a third place finish from Stephanie Schmidt. The Spartan women look to exact some revenge with a full force squad at Nationals.
